Florida Adds Exclusive Lobster Diving Day for Residents

Florida is taking another step forward in environmental stewardship and promoting sustainable recreation. Governor Ron DeSantis recently announced an exciting addition for diving enthusiasts and marine conservationists alike.

To enhance the 2024 Lobster Mini-Season, Florida residents will have an extra day to dive for lobsters. This special day is set for Sunday, July 14, 2024, just before the regular mini-season on July 24 and 25.

Governor DeSantis’s initiative reflects his commitment to protecting Florida’s marine ecosystems. Highlighting this, he mentioned the state’s historic investments in marine conservation. The FY 2024-2025 Focus on Florida’s Future Budget includes $57 million for coral reef restoration and coastal protection, bringing the total to over $114 million during his second term.

“Florida has the best fishing and boating worldwide because of our natural resources. That’s why we’re making record investments to protect our treasures, like our coral reefs. Additionally, I was pleased today to announce additional prizes for the annual Lionfish Challenge and an extra day for Floridians to harvest lobster.”

said Governor DeSantis.

This new day gives residents a unique chance to harvest lobsters before the mini-season begins.

The regular commercial and recreational lobster season will run from August 6, 2024, to March 31, 2025. This careful scheduling aims to boost participation while focusing on conservation, ensuring the sustainable use of Florida’s marine resources.

For those seeking an edge in catching spiny lobster during Florida’s mini-season, consider these tips:

  • Consider night diving: lobsters are more active and easier to spot after dark, glowing under your dive light. Make sure you have proper lighting and safety gear!
  • Utilize a tickle stick: these will help gently coax lobsters out of their hiding spots without alarming them. Additionally, look for lobsters in rocky crevices and under ledges where they tend to hide during the day. This will also minimize stress and potential injury to the creature.
  • Carry a measuring device to ensure each catch meets the legal size requirements before bagging them.
  • Scouting areas with strong tidal currents can be advantageous, as these currents tend to uncover and disperse lobsters from their shelters. Remember to always bring a buddy and ensure all equipment is in optimal condition, including dive lights and communication devices, for a safe and productive experience.

We encourage all diving and fishing fans to stay updated and follow sustainable practices.
